“Thank God for Laziness”. Servant Leadership at its best! Chat with David Mathews of The Oberoi Group of Hotels

What does it feels like when you absolutely love what you do?

If you want to know, listen to David Mathews as he chats with Raju and Triccia about his more than three decades in high-end hospitality! He says about his early life that he was lazy and almost accidentally found his way to be trained at India’s most prestigious hotel training center, The Oberoi Center for Learning and Development (OCLD).

Triccia and Raju got to see the magic of true servant leadership when they were in a lockdown in March 2020 in Mumbai, India at the hotel that David manages. We wanted to speak with David to get a behind-the-scene glimpse at several aspects of LEADERSHIP, which pervades the entire Oberoi Group, which has more than 30 luxury hotels under its name and 10 other hotels under the name Trident.

Worth listening to some incredible perspectives around:

  • what it means to be of service, particularly when corporate cultures are tested in a global pandemic
  • how the leader, the manager and the human — the person at the helm — is impacted
  • how employees are affected and treated by a company in a hard-hit industry
  • dealing with inner and outer conflicts in a business that is so customer-focused, and when business is challenged
  • what it means to be bold
  • where to seek inspiration

It was easeful and deep to talk to and introverted David about real-life issues in an extrovert-centric business!
